Tequila & the blue agave fruit.

Working on a project about food production and looking through my archive. The spirit most associated with Mexico has a namesake town where much of it comes from. The town of Tequila is where tons of the blue agave fruit grown in the nearby region comes in daily to be turned into the distilled liquor.

Thinking of Bamako.

Awful news from Bamako. I hope the situation gets resolved peacefully and fast. Here is an image from when I photographed on assignment for the Aga Khan foundation a couple of years ago.

The Red Hat Society in St.Louis.

The Red Hat Society started a process of nominating a members to be the "Red Hatter of the year". "Nominees are made up of inspiring women who deserve recognition for the impact they have made in the lives of others." -Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Society)
Well, they certainly made an impression on me when I met them at a restaurant in St. Louis last week! Plenty of great spirit was present!

Craftsmanship- Bhutan.

I have shown samples from Bhutan in he past- I place I miss- I hope the opportunities comes back again in the future. Anyway- visiting this carpenter workshop I met with a very skilled man. He was working on preserving an alter in one of the many temples or Dzongs. In Bhutan, you have the 13 arts - the students are often trained to be able to preserve and to keep up the traditional arts of Bhutan- It means working on the history, the monasteries as well as the different festivals that tae s place in Bhutan.

Greece- A Wedding and the storm.

Just a small note. The Wedding was great- but so was the storm. Before the electricity went, this is what was left by bar on the beach...

The State: Ladonia- The Art: Nimis by Lars Vilks

"Nimis" is a sculpture made by driftwood located a few kilometres from the beautiful little village of Arild in southern Sweden. The story is long- but the short version is as follows... The artist Lars Vilks decided to make a sculpture called Nimis (Latin, it means "too much"- see the Wikipedia link above). It is made by driftwood in a location hard to reach. It was not noticed for two years (construction started in 1980). The problem was that it is a nature reserve- the local council consequently ordered it to be removed. Lars Vilks appealed and eventually declared it his own state: Ladonia! Clearly, the court case continued- but eventually, the artist was allowed to build a sculpture on the location and Nimis has become possibly the most important tourist attraction in the area near Arild...

Scandinavian summer

It was windy, 11meters per second. That means waves that seems large. At least in a small boat. Then again, it is not unusual for summer in Scandinavia- Great to be back.

York, UK

York is down there somewhere, under that very big cloud.
Visiting York- The historic city centre, surrounded by its glorious town walls, was founded by the Romans in 71AD. The York Minster is beautiful- google it and you will see loads of pictures of it... not mine though.
The river, river is beautiful, well used it seems by the rowers.
York is a University town which is easy to recognise as you walk through it.

The streets of Kathmandu.

Kathmandu Airport is pretty small and I can imagine it gets crowded fast. Aid is having to wait in order to get in with assistance to those who needs it, according to some news channels.

Salesman, early evening in Kathmandu
Given the infrastructure in Kathmandu, I can only, possibly, imagine how it must be to dig through the ruins for survivors. These photos are from August 2014.

Kathmandu. Nepal.

I remember visiting Kathmandu last year. Waking up in the morning seeing this view overlooking the city. It is awful to think about what people will be seeing when they wake up tomorrow morning.
So sad.

Photography Workshop: The Tigers Nest Monastery in Bhutan.

The Tigers Nest Monastery is the most famous monastery in Bhutan- it lays up in the hills and takes about 3 hours to walk in order to reach. It was built in 1692. I fire in 1998 caused major damage and the restoration was done in 2005- all by hand as no heavy equipment can be get to the site!

Join me in August and we will visit the Tigers Nest as part of our Workshop program- it is an amazing opportunity.
This coming August, we are repeating last years Photography Workshop in Bhutan. The agenda is amazing- the experiences even better. Drop me an email or phone call should you have questions.
Date: 11-20 August. More info on this link.

Earth Day

These guys were walking home from work whilst I was driving through Bamako in the early evening.
Today is the International Earth Day. For me, it makes me think of how us humans and how we use our planet. Driving through downtown Bamako, a city of nearly 2 million, it is pretty clear that we do not all use the planet in the same way.
